US retail sales rose 0.1% in August vs -0.2% expected

  • US retail sales rose slightly in August.

U.S. retail sales rose 0.1 percent to $710.8 billion in August, the U.S. Census Bureau reported on Tuesday. That reading followed July’s 1.1 percent rise and came in better than market expectations for a 0.2 percent decline.

Retail sales ex Autos rose 0.1%, missing analysts’ estimate of a 0.2% increase.

“Total sales for the period June 2024 to August 2024 increased by 2.3% compared to the same period a year ago,” the press release said. “The percentage change from June 2024 to July 2024 has been revised from 1.0% to 1.1%.”

Market reaction

The US dollar index rose on the immediate reaction and was last seen up 0.08% on the day at 100.78.
