New Street in Hudderfield is littered with empty shop units, with another set to close

We all know that it has been a difficult time for the retail sector in recent years.

Every week we unfortunately see a number of stores close. From big names to independents, it often feels like no store or chain is immune to financial challenges.




Unfortunately, it is reflected on our high streets. On Friday 17th May we walked around Huddersfield town center and came across a staggering amount of vacant shops.

Walking from the start and end of the pedestrianized section of New Street, from the former Wilko unit to B&M, I saw 10 vacant shop units. Many with “to leave” signs in the windows.

Even more worryingly, it looks like we’re about to lose another popular New Street store. In the windows of Freddie’s home improvement store, I saw “end of lease” in big letters.

It will provide further depth to Huddersfield town centre’s retail landscape. As always, we’ll keep you posted on the latest shop openings and closings in Huddersfield.
