Australian always flies through Changi Airport in Singapore, worth it

As an Aussie living in New Orleans, I travel home four times a year, always looking for ways to make the long journey more enjoyable.

I used to route my flights around Europe, which allowed me to explore new cities before heading home. But once I discovered Singapore’s Changi Airport, it quickly became the stop where I planned my entire trip.

I probably shouldn’t have been so surprised to see that Changi was named one of the top 10 airports in the world.

Here’s why it’s always worth stopping over in Singapore.

First, Changi’s technology is like something out of a sci-fi movie

When I first passed through Singapore, I wasn’t expecting much more than a standard layover. But stepping into Changi was a revelation.

The airport’s cutting-edge technology makes travel incredibly smooth. For example, you can check your bags at different terminals (regardless of the airline) and they will still arrive on the correct flight.

This level of comfort is hard to beat.

The facial scanning technology used at security and immigration also speeds up the process, allowing me to easily pass through checkpoints without the usual hassles.

For the first time, I wished I was taller

When I fly between the US and Australia, which usually takes a full day, I usually just want to get to my destination as quickly as possible. But when I stopped at Changi, I wished I had more time to explore.

Now that I’m back, I can say that the most stunning place in the airport is the Jewel complex, home to the world’s tallest indoor waterfall.

The first time I stepped into the space, I was amazed – it felt like I’d stepped straight into a lush tropical oasis, far from the usual chaotic airport environment.

The waterfall itself is incredible, apparently pouring from an opening in the glass dome into a pool surrounded by vibrant greenery. But there are also plenty of photo-worthy spots along the glass bridges surrounding the feature.

In addition to the waterfall, there are lush indoor gardens, a butterfly enclosure, a rooftop pool and a cinema. It’s the perfect place to kill a few hours.

It’s not just a place to catch a connecting flight, it’s a destination in itself

The airport is known for its world-class facilities and we quickly learned that it lives up to that. From bedrooms and spas to luxury shopping and dining, it’s been designed to take the stress out of travel.

Changi feels more like a luxury resort than an airport. Only sleep-deprived travelers know the sheer bliss of having access to a soft bed with silky sheets in a dark, soundproof room between long flights.

After a hot shower and a quick nap at the airport, I feel refreshed and ready for the next leg of my journey.

I’m already looking forward to my next flight to Australia

Making a nearly 24-hour journey four times a year is a hassle, but Changi Airport made the harrowing journey a little easier to swallow.

The combination of advanced travel technology, luxurious amenities and thoughtful design makes Changi more than just a stopover – it’s an experience I look forward to every time I travel.
