Halle Bailey gave up veganism during pregnancy and started eating meat

In an Instagram Live that was recorded and reposted by The Shade Room, the singer explained how and why she changed her diet during pregnancy, adding that she’s received numerous questions about still being vegan.

“And the answer is, not anymore,” Bailey said. “And the reason is because I think I told some of you that when I was pregnant, I just started craving meat.”

Before her pregnancy meat cravings, she had been vegan for about 13 years, she said.

“I said, ‘Well, I’m going to give my body what it wants right now, because I’m doing a really hard job growing a human, and I also wanted to make sure Halo was getting the right nutrients and things . needed,” Bailey said. She welcomed her son, Halo, with her partner, DDG, in 2023.

The singer shared that even though she started eating meat, she still eats mostly vegan food.

“If I have a hunch or a craving for chicken or something, I’ll eat it. But I don’t eat much meat. But it’s like if I want it, I’ll have it and then that’s it. Bailey said.

She added that she eventually learned that it’s not that unusual for vegans to change their diet during pregnancy.

“I was looking at it and I see so many women like me who have been vegan for years and years,” Bailey said. “Once they got pregnant, it was, like, out the window.”

Dr. Allison Suttle, gynecologist and chief medical officer at Sanford Health, previously told Business Insider that cravings for meat can be a sign that the body is deficient in certain nutrients, such as iron and vitamin B12.

While eating a vegan diet during pregnancy doesn’t necessarily pose risks to mother or baby, Suttle said it’s harder for the body to absorb iron from plants compared to iron found in animal products. This means vegetarians and vegans should also eat foods rich in vitamin C, which can aid absorption.

In 2017, Bailey — along with her sister Chloe — told Complex that their mother influenced them to go vegan.

“Being vegan started with our mother. One day she said, “I’m going to try being a vegetarian for a week. You can join me if you want”. We started the week with it and we just never went back,” Bailey said.

A representative for Bailey did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent by Business Insider outside regular business hours.
