Foreign Office warns British tourists in Greece ‘don’t go alone’

British tourists in Greece have been warned after a 26-year-old British tourist was raped after being lured to a beach in a popular holiday spot. A British tourist was allegedly raped after being dragged onto a beach by a soldier.

Police in Crete have arrested a 21-year-old suspect who faces prosecution by a military court on suspicion of sexual assault. The 26-year-old victim claimed she met the alleged soldier in a local bar before being lured to the beach where he forced himself on her.

Reports suggest the soldier is still in custody in Hersonissos, Greece, but has reportedly filed a counter-suit to maintain his innocence and instead accuse the victim of false accusation and defamation after the harrowing incident last week.

In the following period, both people would have been arrested, the Greek soldier being sent to the military prosecutor in Chania. He will appear in court later today and the victim has been asked to make a statement.

A judge will then decide whether the suspect will be released on bail or remanded in custody. The UK Foreign Office warns on its website: “Sexual assault and personal attacks can occur in Greece. These include attacks on foreign visitors in tourist areas and towns.

“We recommend that all travelers follow this advice: save the location of your accommodation in the maps app so it’s easier to find at the end of the night, create a WhatsApp group to keep in touch with others in your group, keep a forget- check each other’s drinks to make sure they’re not stiff, don’t let a friend walk back to the hotel alone, and don’t give a drunk more alcohol.”

It adds: “You should immediately report anything you see that doesn’t seem right to local authorities or hospitality management.”
