Matt Peet shared his pride after Wigan Warriors beat Hull KR 38-6 in the Betfred Challenge Cup semi-final at the Eco-Power Stadium.

The Warriors scored seven tries in an emphatic performance to secure their first Betfred Challenge Cup final at Wembley Stadium since 2017.

Sharing his feelings after the game, Peet said: “I’m delighted and very proud as a manager to take Wigan to Wembley. Everyone associated with the Club should be equally proud.”

Reflecting on the performance, Peet said: “We knew we were going into a tough game. Hull KR are an outstanding team who are hard to stop when they play quick ball, so the priority had to be our defense and be at our best. Even when Hull KR got a quick ball I liked the way we stayed connected and covered for each other and our physicality early on went a long way.”

Luke Thompson played all 80 minutes in the win and praising the striker, Peet said: “He was outstanding – I can’t wait to see his stats. I watched his defensive actions closely to see if he needed a rest, but he was full of energy and quality. It’s a credit to Luke’s diligence and the way he takes care of himself.”

When he arrived at Wembley, Peet said: “You can’t talk about Wigan without talking about the Challenge Cup. Now we can go down to Wembley in numbers as a Club – players, families, supporters – and play a showpiece. It’s going to come quickly so it’s important the players enjoy the training and be in the moment because that’s why they do it.”

The Warriors’ Wheelchair team progressed to the Betfred Challenge Cup final after beating Leeds Rhinos in Hull, while our Women’s team will be looking to join the Men’s at Wembley when they take on Leeds Rhinos at the Totally Wicked Stadium on Sunday.

On the possibility of a trio of Warriors teams in the Challenge Cup final, Peet added: “I’m very proud of our wheelchair team who are building something special. For the ladies, they will be looking to keep their momentum going and we have seen how Denis has prepared his team. I look forward to seeing them tomorrow and wish them all the best.”
