The SIU is investigating the arrest death of a woman in Barrie

A woman died Saturday after she was found unresponsive in her vehicle while being transported to North Central Correctional Center on Friday

The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating after a 28-year-old woman died Saturday after being arrested in Barrie.

On Thursday evening, Barrie police officers arrested the woman in the area of ​​49 Coulter St. for outstanding mandates. She was taken to the police station and held in a cell, the SIU said in a news release.

On Friday evening, Ontario Provincial Police transported the woman from the Barrie police station to the Central North Correctional Center in Penetanguishene. She was found unresponsive in the vehicle and taken to Georgian Bay General Hospital in Midland.

The woman was pronounced dead at the hospital on Saturday.

An autopsy is scheduled for May 20.
