At least four people have died after an oil barge sank off Venezuela, a Reuters report and sources say

CARACAS/MARACAIBO (Reuters) – At least four people were reported dead after an oil barge operated by a contractor for Venezuela’s state energy company PDVSA capsized in the country’s Lake Maracaibo, according to an accident report on Thursday and sources.

Another 19 people were successfully rescued by Thursday morning at the scene of the accident, the report added.

Incidents involving barges carrying Venezuelan oil and fuel between domestic ports and to the Caribbean have become common. A large oil spill near Tobago from an overturned barge sailing from Venezuela hit several Caribbean nations in March.

PDVSA did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
