What happened: On Wednesday, several media outlets reported that OpenAI plans to change its business model.

An OpenAI spokesperson responded to media reports saying that “non-profit is central to our mission and will continue to be.”

Why it matters: Musk’s stance on turning OpenAI for profit isn’t new. He has repeatedly questioned the legality and legitimacy of this alleged transition.

In August this year, he said: “Either turning a non-profit into a for-profit is legal and everyone should be doing it, or it’s illegal and OpenAI is a house of cards.”

The tech billionaire also filed a lawsuit against parent ChatGPT, accusing the company of prioritizing commercial gains over its original mission of helping humanity. OpenAI has previously rejected Musk’s allegations of a “founding agreement”.

In a court filing, the company said: “The incorporation agreement is instead a fiction that Musk conjured up to claim the fruits of a venture that he initially supported, then abandoned, then saw successful without him”.
