Toyota, Mazda, Mercedez-Benz have recall issues, NHTSA says

Toyota Motor Corp is recalling more than 42,000 vehicles in the USS due to the loss of brake assist that can extend the distance needed to stop, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Friday.

The recall affects certain 2023-2024 Corolla Cross Hybrid vehicles. The agency reported a software error in the electronic control unit that manages the vehicle during skidding that could result in the loss of cornering brake assist.

A loss of brake assist can increase the distance required to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Mazda is recalling 77,670 U.S. sport utility vehicles because of a software bug that can cause front airbags to deploy with excessive force in a crash, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Friday.

The recall involves some MX-5 Miata vehicles from model years 2016-2023.

Dealers will update airbag sensor control module free software, NHTSA said.

Stellantis’ Fiat also recalled just over 15,000 its 124 Spider model vehicles, which is based on the same platform as the Miata, for the same concern on Wednesday.

Mercedes-Benz USA is recalling more than 27,000 vehicles due to a potential risk of engine control unit (ECU) software causing the engine to overheat or stall, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced Friday.

The recall includes certain 2021-2023 Mercedes and Maybach S580 luxury sedans.

An engine stall can increase the risk of a crash and an overheated engine can increase the risk of fire, the motor safety regulator said.

Dealers will update ECU software free of charge after respective owners are notified.
