Manchester City vs West Ham United Prediction

Manchester City is almost there. A win over West Ham United on Sunday would see Pep Guardiola’s side back as Premier League champions.

City are looking to become the first team in English football history to win a fourth title on the bounce. Huddersfield Town, Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United have made it three in a row, but none have been able to overcome.

City are closing in on their sixth title in seven years. Again, this would be a unique feat in the 135-year history of the English top flight.

Guardiola’s men are within striking distance thanks to a 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday night. An Erling Haaland double saw City past the north Londoners and move them two points clear at the top of the table ahead of the final weekend.

City didn’t have it all their own way in their game in hand. Many Tottenham fans did not want to see their team win and thus help tip the title to arch-rivals Arsenal. This was not a position that Ange Postecoglou agreed with, as he revealed after the match.

But despite the sentiment of the supporters, there was never any doubt that Tottenham’s players would do their best, especially as Champions League qualification was still a possibility at the outset.

City weren’t at their best and Son Heung-min spurned a huge chance to equalize for Spurs late on, but the champions eventually found a way to emerge victorious.

The city had been looking ominous for weeks. Since the 0-0 draw with Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium on the last day of March, they have won eight games on the bounce.

At the time, a goalless draw seemed like a good result for Arsenal. However, City’s subsequent perfection shows that, in hindsight, the Gunners really needed to win that head-to-head.

Manchester City vs West Ham United betting tips

Manchester City will become Premier League champions if they beat West Ham United on Sunday afternoon.

Manchester City to win to nil – 9/10 (Betfred)

David Moyes does not have high hopes for his side’s chances of springing a surprise this weekend.

“It would be difficult to stop their under-14s from winning the title,” he said after West Ham United’s 3-1 win over Luton Town last time out. “Professional is the word I would use. We will try to do the best we can.”

Manchester City have been in this position more than once and they haven’t always had it easy.

In 2012/13, they found themselves 2-1 down to Queens Park Rangers before late interventions from Edin Dzeko and Sergio Aguero. Two years ago City trailed 2-0 at home to Aston Villa before coming back to win 3-2 and claim the title.

We anticipate a simpler afternoon this time around. West Ham have nothing left to play for as they have dropped out of the race for European football.

The city does not need to open too early. If they control the game and stay solid defensively, they will almost certainly come out on top.

Manchester City to win both halves – 8/11 (Betfred)

Moyes would love to spoil the party at Manchester City and end his tenure as West Ham boss on a high.

But when a team has nothing to play for and is facing a team with everything on the line, it’s very hard to match their intensity.

When you combine that with City’s superior quality, it’s hard to see anything other than a comfortable home win at the Etihad Stadium.

Getting his nose in front in the first half would calm the nerves of supporters inside the ground. Going into half-time, say, 2-0 ahead would also deflate Arsenal, who host Everton on Sunday.

West Ham have had defensive problems all season. Only the bottom three have conceded more goals, so they may struggle to keep City’s attack quiet.

Pick Manchester City to win both halves at 8/11 with Betfred

Phil Foden to score anytime – 10/11 (Betfred)

Kevin De Bruyne and Ederson were both forced off against Tottenham and at the time of writing we don’t know if either player will be fit to start on Sunday.

Phil Foden came through Tuesday’s contest unscathed and will be keen to cap off a fantastic season with a goal.

It’s easy to forget that Foden wasn’t a guaranteed starter at times last quarter. For example, he was a substitute in the Champions League final against Inter.

Fast forward 12 months and the England international is one of the first names on Guardiola’s squad sheet.

Foden scored 17 goals in the Premier League and 25 in all competitions in 2023/24. Only Haaland has more in both categories.
