Fairy Trail Walk for Esther honors a local man’s sister

“My idea was to combine the two things that Esther liked to do the most when she came to stay with me,” says the organizer.

Newmarket resident Christian Wehrli created a special StoryWalk to honor the memory of his sister Esther, a teacher who loved storybooks.

Newmarket Public Library is hosting a Fairy Trail Walk for Esther, a kindergarten teacher from Switzerland, on Sunday, June 9.

When he visited his brother in Newmarket, he enjoyed walking down Tom Taylor Road and spending time at the Newmarket Library, a library news release said.

“My idea was to combine the two things that Esther enjoyed doing most when she came to stay with me and create a fundraising event in her memory, with all proceeds going towards the purchase of books for children for the library and future StoryWalks in the community,” says Wehrli.

StoryWalks are an outdoor reading activity that combines literacy and exercise. Families walk, reading a children’s book page by page on signs along a trail in a public park.

The Fairy Trail Walk for Esther will feature the famous children’s book The paper bag princess by Robert Munsch and be located along a trail in Fairy Lake Park.

The Fairy Trail Walk for Esther takes place on June 9, starting at the Fairy Lake Park Amphitheater at 1:30 p.m. Cost to attend is $25 per person ($49 family of three or more). Children can take part in a parade wearing their favorite fairy tale costumes, enjoy watching a balloon artist and receive a commemorative water bottle.

Tickets are available at fairytrailrun.com.
