Check your pockets as a £1 coin from 2016 could be worth £2,500

Anyone still using cash is advised to be wary of a 2016 pound coin, which could be worth £2,500 – with dozens of them in circulation. TikTok user @coincollectingwizard posted a video explaining what to look for – and experts say at least 50 have already been found.

In a recent video, the collector said: “Look for a coin dated obverse 2016 with micro-engraving 2017 on the reverse. The microgravure is so small that you may need a microscope. We understand that at least one example was sold for £2,500 to a buyer in Spain in 2017. The fault is particularly difficult to detect due to the size of the micro-engraving.”

The TikTok page advises you to be careful with the coin, especially those minted in 2016.

“Remember you are looking at a coin dated obverse 2016 with microengraving 2017 on the reverse. So make sure you check all your coins,” the TikTok user added.

“It’s an easy error to miss because it’s so small, but take your time looking at the coins.”

The experts at checkyourchange previously highlighted the coin. They wrote: “The new 12-sided coins have the date on both sides. It’s not that obvious on the reverse, but they have repeating micro-digits on the inside of the rim.

“Following the Royal Mint’s recent quality control standards and (to their credit) the massive number of new £1s they had to make, I suppose having different dies reversed with a tiny, almost invisible difference , probably caused them trouble. !

“And it seems it has indeed caused problems and another error coin has been created by someone who wasn’t paying attention, this time it’s a 2016 £1 coin with ‘2016’ in large, normal letters on the left To the Queen, accompanied by 2017. the reverse showing the tiny numerals “2017” on the rim.
