Why are Liverpool wearing new kit in Jürgen Klopp’s last game? The Reds debut in the 2024/25 retro strip

Liverpool will say goodbye to one of their greatest ever managers against Wolves after Jürgen Klopp steps down after nine years. But there will already be a nod to Liverpool’s next chapter on display at Anfield.

The Reds will finish the season in third place but will be keen to put on a show for their departing manager. Klopp has been remarkably successful during his tenure, but is now handing over the baton, with Arne Slot set to take over.

Slot’s appointment could be announced as early as next week after he confirmed he is leaving Feyenoord for Anfield.

But despite this being the last game of the Klopp era, Liverpool will be donning the kit that Slot’s side are set to line up next season. The Reds have already unveiled the 2024/25 retro strip, which was inspired by the club’s 1984 European Cup success.

Liverpool have confirmed that the new strip will be debuted against Wolves, alongside new warm-up kits and anthem jackets, which are worn as the players make their way down the tunnel.

There has been some confusion about wearing new kits during current campaigns. Arsenal opted not to wear the latest version against Everton, with many incorrectly suggesting they were prevented from doing so because they could win the title.

Premier League rules know it is allowed, as long as clubs give at least 14 days’ notice if they intend to wear their new kit for the final game of the season. It then effectively becomes an ‘alternative’ band to the usual home and away offerings.

Liverpool’s 2024/25 strip will be the last of his current contract with Nike, which expires at the end of next season. SportBusiness claims Adidas will take over, having previously worked with the Reds between 2006 and 2012.

Liverpool.com says: The new kit looks pretty impressive and Liverpool fans will get to see it in action against Wolves. It won’t distract from who the afternoon is really about, though, and the game will be about looking back on Klopp’s tenure before looking ahead to next season.
