Frozen 3: Everything you need to know

Frozen 3 is one of the most anticipated Disney movies as Elsa and Anna return once again for a new magical adventure.

What new challenges will the sisters face? What’s going on in Arendelle? Will we meet new characters? Does Olaf still enjoy warm hugs? Will Elsa have a girlfriend?

Unfortunately, not much is known at this point about the story and characters, but we do know that production is in the works and looks very promising. It’s still a long wait, though — Disney CEO Bob Iger has confirmed that the threequel is slated for a 2026 release.

“We’re already looking forward to 2026 and beyond with Frozen 3, the first Toy Story movie in 2019, and a new Star Wars movie that brings the Mandalorian and Grogu to the big screen for the first time,” he revealed during the film. The company’s Q1 2024 earnings call on February 8, 2024.

Disney is pulling out the big guns for the next few years, hoping a new Frozen movie will take the box office by storm.

The film is currently in production, and the work so far has left one of Frozen’s original creators “blown away”.

Jennifer Lee – who wrote and co-directed the first two films – revealed in October 2023 that the creative team is already doing amazing work on the third film in the series.

“I’m so excited. I don’t know what to do about it yet. I might not do anything,” she said.

Lee confirmed in June 2023 that he would not be directing the third film, marking a major behind-the-scenes change for the saga.

“Where we’re going with Frozen didn’t come from me,” she explained. “It came from an incredible person. … And I was blown away by that and I’m having a great time with that team.”

It’s possible that Lee will still end up writing Frozen 3, and she’ll be involved in the film’s development anyway, as she’s the creative director of Walt Disney Animation Studios.

We don’t know who this director is, but while we wait for more information, here’s everything you need to know about Frozen 3 following its official confirmation from Disney.

Frozen 3 Potential Release Date: When Can We Expect Frozen 3?

Frozen 3 has yet to confirm a release date, but we do know that the film will arrive in 2026.

The new film was officially announced by Disney boss Bob Iger in February 2023 and it was Iger who also revealed that it was set for a 2026 release. However, he did not provide any further information on how far along the new film is, from a developmental point of view.

It’s been six years between the release dates for Frozen and Frozen 2, so the wait for Anna and Elsa’s return in Frozen 3 is as long as expected.

Whenever we hear more, we’ll update this article.

Frozen 3 Cast: Who’s Returning for Frozen 3?

It wouldn’t be a Frozen movie without Kristen Bell as Anna, Idina Menzel as Elsa, Josh Gad as Olaf, and Jonathan Groff as Kristoff (and Sven).

All of them will likely return, and while it hasn’t been officially confirmed by Disney, Menzel has hinted that they all will — even if she doesn’t know anything about the movie yet.

“To be completely honest, they’ve been teasing us and I have no idea. They’re not showing you a script. They’re not showing you anything,” she said in June 2023 while speaking to Billboard. “All I know is, yes, we’re going to do one, and that’s it.”

Elsewhere, there are likely returns from Sterling K Brown as Mattias, Jason Ritter as Northuldra member Ryder, Rachel Matthews as Ryder’s sister Honeymaren and Ciarán Hinds as Rock Trolls leader Pabbie.

After Frozen 2 flashbacks, we got to see even more of Evan Rachel Wood and Alfred Molina as Anna and Elsa’s parents, Iduna and Agnarr.

Frozen 3 Plot: How Does Frozen 2’s Ending Set Up a Third Movie?

Next, Anna and Elsa head to the enchanted forest outside Arendelle to discover why a mysterious voice called Elsa and stop the enchanted spirits from destroying Arendelle.

It seems that in the past, there was a battle between the Arendelle soldiers and the people of Northuldra who live in the forest, which resulted in the forest being blocked off from the rest of the world.

Long story short, Anna and Elsa discover that their parents were on their way to Ahtohallan to discover the source of Elsa’s power when they shipwrecked. Anna and Elsa find their parents’ ship in the enchanted forest and learn that their mother was a Northuldran.

Furthermore, their grandfather was responsible for the conflict and created a dam in the forest that was meant to weaken the Northuldran people. In order to right the wrongs of the past, Anna realizes that she must break the dam to free the forest.

And he does it just in time. Elsa was frozen in Ahtohallan searching for the voice, which turned out to be a memory of her mother. Elsa becomes the “fifth spirit”, the bridge between the magical world and the human world.

But as we all know, a bridge has two sides, and Anna is the other. So, Elsa stays in the forest and Anna becomes Queen of Arendelle, ensuring that the two kingdoms live happily ever after.

It seems like a natural conclusion to the arcs created in Frozen, living up to the producer’s promise that the two films will tell “a complete story.” Elsa has now fully embraced her magical side and Anna has found her place in the world.

Who knows what the film will be about at this stage, but Gad has previously said that the film would only happen if “there was a reason for it to exist,” as in the sequel.

“I don’t know if or when there’s going to be a Frozen 3. That’s way above my pay grade,” he told PopCulture. “If there’s always a story worth telling, I’m sure Jennifer Lee and the incredible team at Disney Animation will one day tell that story.”

Let’s hope they found that story.
