Massachusetts Governor Healey appoints Caljouw as Insurance Commissioner

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey has announced the appointment of Michael T. Caljouw as the state’s new insurance commissioner.

Caljouw comes to DOI with 33 years of experience in state insurance law and policy, including most recently as vice president of government affairs for Blue Cross Blue Shield and previously as general counsel and deputy director for the Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation , which oversees the Insurance Division.

Caljouw succeeds Gary D. Anderson, who assumed a new role as executive director of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners in May. Anderson was appointed insurance commissioner in 2017 by former Gov. Charlie Baker.

During his career in the public and private insurance sector, Caljouw has worked on insolvency and cost containment laws, insurance rate decisions and the review of major insurance mergers and acquisitions across all lines of insurance business.

Caljouw is the board chair of the Rappaport Center for Law and Public Policy. He is a former board member of the Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation, the Massachusetts Health Policy Forum, the Massachusetts Health Policy Commission, and the Massachusetts Associated Industries.

The Department of Insurance is responsible for overseeing and monitoring an approximately $70 billion industry with more than 1,400 licensed insurance companies and approximately 200,000 licensed individual insurance producers.

“Our administration is committed to ensuring a level playing field for businesses and consumers and making our state more affordable for all of our residents,” said Governor Healey.

“I am excited to return to public service under the Healey-Driscoll Administration with a mission to ensure stable, affordable and transparent insurance markets and protect the interests of Massachusetts consumers,” Caljouw said.
