A Birmingham man has been charged with arson offenses after a teenager was seriously injured in the middle of a police chase.

West Midlands Police have announced that a 28-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm with intent to cause violence.

The incident happened when a Nissan Micra failed to stop for officers during a routine check in Balsall Heath on Friday afternoon (May 17).

A police vehicle followed the car, which continued to cut off another car on Edward Road at the junction with Lincoln Street at around 12.50pm.

Now, after charging him, police have named the man as Hakeem Ebrahim, of no fixed abode. In addition to being charged with possession of a firearm, he was also charged with possession of a prohibited weapon and possession of ammunition without a certificate.

Officers said that following his charges, Ebrahim will appear at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court on Monday (May 20).

During the police chase, a teenager who was in the attacker’s Nissan Micra suffered serious injuries.

He currently remains in hospital receiving treatment for his injuries and has been described as being in a stable condition. The teenager was also arrested for possession of a firearm.

Inquiries are still ongoing as officers seek to trace a third man who fled in the vehicle himself following the incident.

The car was eventually recovered and is now being forensically examined by the force as CCTV camera feeds are viewed by investigators.

Meanwhile, the force appealed to anyone who may have any potential information to come forward as soon as possible by calling 101 and quoting incident reference number 1869 of May 17.
