US DOJ Proposes Google Breakup as Antitrust Solution – Bloomberg By Investing.com

Investing.com– The U.S. Justice Department told a federal judge it is considering recommending that Google Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ: ) be forced to sell some of its units as a remedy for its alleged monopolization of the online search market, Bloomberg. reported on Wednesday.

DOJ officials made the recommendation in a recent court filing, the Bloomberg report said.

Officials also suggested that Judge Amit Mehta could force the tech giant to reveal the underlying data used to build its search engine and artificial intelligence products.

Bloomberg reported earlier this year that the DOJ was considering plans to break up Google after Mehta ruled that the firm maintained an illegal monopoly in the online search and advertising markets.

The previous report suggested that Google could sell its Android operating system and Chrome web browser as part of an antitrust settlement.

Google may also be forced to stop paying billions of dollars to make its search engine the default on several popular devices, including Apple Inc’s (NASDAQ: ) iPhone.

Plenty of Google’s smaller rivals, including Yapping (NYSE: ), DuckDuckGo and adMarketplace have requested the sale of some of Google’s units. The firm controls about 90% of all internet searches in the US.
