Parks Canada welcomes all new and returning visitors to the 104th Trent-Severn Waterway National Historic Site of Canada boating season.

The waterway, which begins at the mouth of the Trent River in Quinte West, opened Friday and is open to all types of boats and watercraft, the federal agency said.

Pleasure boaters sailing north on the Trent-Severn Waterway system is a national historic treasure.

The canal system was completed in 1920 after nearly a century of construction to complete more than 40 locks, man-made canals and 150 dams, according to the federal government.

“Parks Canada offers 450,000 km2 of stories and the Trent-Severn Waterway has experiences for everyone. The lock stations of the Trent-Severn Waterway between Trenton and Port Severn connect
people of incredible beauty, natural heritage and modern Canadian memories at our national historic sites,” the agency said in a news release.

Higher water levels at the start of the boating season have led to some warnings being issued by Parks Canada to waterway users.

“Plowers, paddlers and swimmers are reminded that certain areas continue to have higher than average flows and are asked to use caution,” Parks Canada said.

“Floating debris may be present and navigational aids may be off station as we continue to monitor navigational channels. Boaters are also advised to watch their route and wash close to shore to avoid damage to docks, boats and property.”
