In a recent turn of events, the Democratic mayor of Birmingham, Alabama, Randall Woodfinthe former president publicly denounced Donald Trumphis approval by National Rifle Associationlabeling him as “sick”.

What happened: In an interview with Rev. Al Sharpton on MSNBC, Woodfin said, “It’s appalling … we’re the only country where this is a problem.”

“We need the men and women of Congress in both chambers to have the strength to fight the NRA.”

Sharpton pointed out during the interview that Woodfin not long ago held a press conference last week regarding a shooting spree that left two children traumatized on Mother’s Day.

As Time pointed out, Trump, during his speech at the NRA’s annual meeting in Texas, encouraged gun owners to participate in the 2024 election. The NRA officially endorsed Trump shortly before his speech.

Trump said the Second Amendment “is very much on the ballot” in November and warned that if he is president Joe Biden is re-elected, “I’m coming for your guns, 100% sure.”

The Biden administration has initiated several measures to combat gun violence, including a new rule to close a loophole that allows unlicensed dealers to sell thousands of guns annually without conducting background checks.

Despite the backlash, Trump has vowed to continue to defend the Second Amendment, which he believes is “under siege.” He also referred to himself as “the best friend the gun owners ever had in the White House.”

Why does it matter: The NRA’s endorsement of Trump and his call for gun owners to vote in the 2024 election comes amid speculation about his potential third term in office. Trump hinted at a possible third-term presidency during his NRA speech, drawing comparisons of Franklin D. Roosevelt four-term mandate. This caused controversy, given that the 22nd Amendment prohibits a third presidential term.
