Hero father who died saving his 4-year-old son from devastating house fire called

A father who lost his life saving his son after a devastating house fire can today be named Barry Mason.

Mr Mason’s four-year-old son Ethan Mason is fighting for his life in hospital in a medically induced coma after being pulled from the fire by his father.

The boy’s family said Barry “ran back inside to save his little boy” after the fire in the early hours of Sunday in Warrington Road, Wigan.

Bolton Coroner’s Court today confirmed that Barry Mason’s death had been referred to the coroner before an inquest opened. Four others were also injured in the horror fire. No age has been released for Mr. Mason.

Fire investigation teams and police officers remained at the scene of the fire on Monday (April 15) as inquiries continued.

Neighbors told how they were woken to the sound of screams before emergency services descended on the scene at a semi-detached house.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service confirmed on Sunday that the fire started in the kitchen of the house at around 2.30am before spreading to the roof. Pictures taken at the scene show a badly damaged and burnt roof after the flames were eventually extinguished.

Ethan suffered severe burns on his body and is now in an induced coma at the hospital. He suffered 86 percent burns to his body, Jessica’s aunt said on a Go Fund Me page, and has since undergone major surgery.

The burns have been slightly reduced, but he is still bravely fighting for his life, reports the Liverpool Echo. Jessica said she was likely to be in a coma “for a while.”

She said the last thing Ethan’s father did was “run back into a burning house and save his little boy.” Posting on the fundraising page, she said: ‘The next few days are crucial and Ethan now only has a 10% chance of making it through.

“We are all heartbroken but my sister and her other children have lost absolutely everything. Please continue to hope and pray for him.”

More than £16,000 has been raised so far, which will go towards the family.

The Manchester Evening News understands the investigation is still in its early stages and firefighters have remained at the scene to “preserve the scene”. Greater Manchester Police have not provided any further updates.
