Manchester United ‘are crazy’ not to sign two players Dwight Yorke wants at Old Trafford, says BBC pundit

Manchester United have done a great job of developing academy players during Erik ten Hag’s time at Old Trafford.

The rise of Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho shows the strength of Manchester United’s academy – but the club cannot rely entirely on Carrington to deliver a squad worth of talent, not overnight.

Instead, Ineos will have to dip into the transfer market, look for some hidden gems and in some cases buy the best players from another team.

Two Crystal Palace standouts have both been earmarked as possible Manchester United signings – but they would cost a fortune.

Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze tipped for Manchester United

Crystal Palace’s star men Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze helped pick apart Manchester United’s defense in the recent meeting between the two sides, even though the backline consisted of Casemiro and Jonny Evans at half-back.

The pair have thrived under new manager Oliver Glasner, and their futures are becoming a topic of discussion.

Speaking to BBC Sport’s Monday Night Club, Chris Sutton said Manchester United would be mad not to try to sign the duo.

He said: “Who will not be, especially Olise and Eze? I think the jury might be out on Mateta just because he’s done it for long enough, but clubs will be upset if you talk about Manchester United wanting a lift over the summer.

“If they are not for Olise and Eze, they are crazy. They (Crystal Palace) will not be held by them.”

The pair were selected last week by Manchester United Treble winner Dwight Yorke, who told The Express he believed the pair could be two players the Red Devils could build around.

Yorke said: “I have identified two players who I think are very good, the two Crystal Palace lads, (Eberechi) Eze and (Michael Olise). I think those two are fantastic young players.

“One plays at number 10, one plays on the right as an inverted winger. I think these are really exceptional players; I don’t know why people wouldn’t believe that. They would really add value to Man United.”

Manchester United could need the next Olise and Eze

Sutton and Yorke fit the bill, Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze would be excellent additions to this Manchester United team.

But combined, they would cost a staggering fee, with Palace keen to keep them. While Olise has a release clause, it doesn’t come cheap.

United’s budget is expected to be tight and there are more pressing priorities for striker and central defence.

Palace signed Eze for £19.5m in 2020 from QPR and Olise for just £8m from Reading in 2021.

If Manchester United are really smart, the club will find similar talent for similar fees rather than paying the premium.

Ineos is setting up the structure to make such smart offers. This is far from crazy and we hope to see some smart deals made to develop talent this summer, even if they don’t have an immediate impact.
