Ipswich Town captain Sam Morsy pointed to Leeds United’s final total of 90 points to underline how well his side have done this season to earn promotion.

The regular season in the Championship ended with Leeds finishing third in the league, six points behind Ipswich Town, second at the end and seven off the title.

Such a gap doesn’t tell the whole story though, with Leeds leading the top two extremely close to a capitulation in the closing stages of the campaign.

Sam Morsy reflects on Leeds’ points tally

Ipswich Town captain Sam Morsy was in no mood to join in the steady play from the two clubs who rose and finished Leeds.

In fact, he highlighted how well Leeds and Southampton have played this season despite missing out on the top two and now facing the play-offs.

Morsy had this to say to the East Anglian Daily Times about Ipswich managing to finish second and above a team that has amassed 90 points this season:

“It’s an incredible moment. It’s not easy at all, we’ve been competing against some fantastic teams all season – Leicester, Leeds, Southampton – great teams with great managers and top players with experience.

“To come second in that group and get promoted is a phenomenal achievement and it makes it even sweeter that those teams below us have been so good and pushed us all season. You look at Leeds – normally 90 points would do that, but not this season. We managed to get 96, which is a very good number of points and we did it.”

Leeds v Ipswich end of season stats comparison

As the cliché goes, there’s only one stat that really matters and that’s the fact that the Tractor Boys finished in the top two, holding their nerve in the final stretch when Leeds really didn’t.

However, there is cause for optimism for Leeds as the underlying figures of the season show they have been more than a match for the top two.

Ipswich deserved promotion over Leeds

The fact that Leeds made it a fight in the first place after the early stages of the season is a testament to our form in 2024.

Ipswich and Leicester looked like they would run away with first and second during their early winning run, but their performances have leveled out somewhat, as the underlying figures suggest.

Leeds deserved a season of 90 points and more, but we choked at the final hurdle as Ipswich held their nerve and got over the line.

For that, they deserved to go up.
