Plans for a new £13m Pudsey Sixth Form College have been approved by Leeds council planners, paving the way for work to start on the site.

The new Pudsey Sixth Form College will accommodate up to 600 students and 26 different subjects at the site next to Crawshaw Academy, off Kent Road.

Leeds City Councillors approved a planning application in principle to build the college in May, subject to planning conditions, including the award of a financial package linked to the upgrading of off-site sports pitches. A package of road safety works was also agreed, along with a financial contribution for additional public transport.

Council planning officers gave the final go-ahead on Friday following negotiations with developers and imposed a series of 37 planning conditions on the approval. Full plans and reports can be read in full here.

The proposals, which faced local concerns about parking and traffic, were put forward by Luminate Education Group and developed in partnership with Leeds Sixth Form College, along with schools including Crawshaw Academy, Co-op Academy Priesthorpe and Leeds West Academy.

“The new facility will give local students another opportunity.”

last september WLD revealed that college bosses have scrapped their plans to open in 2024 because “unforeseen challenges”.

The college is now set to open in 2025, with an on-site start date to be confirmed.

The continuing education college would offer specialist teachers in up to 26 different subjects. Both A-level and BTech courses would be available, with subjects ranging from art, business, media, philosophy and PE to English, maths, IT, law and French. It would be aimed at students aged 16 to 18 and above.

Meanwhile, Pudsey Grammar School recently revealed its intention to build a £4m extension to increase its sixth form provision at its site off Mount Pleasant Road. A planning application was submitted in January and is awaiting a decision from council planners.
