Leicester City

Leicester City dominated the Championship in 2023/24, but as Burnley showed this term, success in England’s second tier doesn’t always translate to the Premier League.

The Foxes are 4/9 favorites to be relegated at the moment, which may have something to do with the potential FFP fees hanging over their heads. The Midlands outfit were charged by the Premier League last month for allegedly breaching profit and sustainability rules. The EFL did not punish Leicester when the allegations emerged, but they were still charged by the Premier League, leaving them in a precarious position ahead of 2024/25.

Everton

Like Leicester, Everton enter 2024/25 with the threat of further points deductions hanging over their heads. The Toffees finished with 40 points last season in 15th place, despite having four points deducted earlier this year. As a result, with no problems off the field, Sean Dyche and co. they would probably back themselves to survive once more in the upcoming campaign.

However, the Merseyside club could face a further points deduction in relation to the interest costs associated with building the club’s new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock.

Ipswich Town have no FFP issues next season (at least none that have come to light yet). But the Tractor Boys are still among the favorites going down.

Ipswich shocked the English football world by finishing 2nd in the Championship, just a year after winning promotion from League 1. While this is an impressive achievement, it means Kieran McKenna’s side are nowhere near the level of Everton or Leicester, who have a number of proven Premier League stars already on their books.

Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest faced a four-point deduction in 2023/24 but were able to secure survival on the final day. Forest finished 17th in the league with 32 points, six off 18th.

Even without that points deduction, though, the Midlands outfit were lucky to survive. 36 points is often not enough to maintain top-flight status and Forest’s inability to spend big this summer could leave them vulnerable to another relegation.

While Manchester City will obviously not be relegated in a normal season, the 115 FFP charges against them mean they cannot be ruled out for the upcoming campaign.

It is now 15 months since City were hit with 115 Premier League charges for alleged financial irregularities – allegations they strongly deny. There have been reports of a hearing date for fall 2024, with the same reports suggesting a decision by summer 2025, but nothing is confirmed yet.

The disciplinary committee that examines the City file has unlimited powers. This means City could be kicked out of the Premier League or handed a massive fine – or both. Alternatively, they could suffer a huge points deduction imposed at some point, including at the start of a new season.
