Leeds now want to sign ‘quality’ 28-year-old on free transfer, same agent as Georginio Rutter

Leeds United are already being linked with a number of high-profile names with promotion on the horizon if the Whites can beat Southampton, and a German defender is now being linked.

Sunday’s play-off final will determine who secures an immediate return to the Premier League along with Leicester City and Ipswich Town, with Leeds and Southampton relegated from the top tier last season.

Whether or not the club gets promoted will determine the quality of players Leeds can target in the summer. Leeds have made an inquiry to sign a defender from Champions League finalists Dortmund.

Marius Wolf has emerged as a target for The Whites, according to Florian Plettenberg on Twitter. The Sky Germany reporter says Leeds have opened talks for Wolf, who has been a regular for Dortmund this term.

Wolf, 28, made 31 appearances for Dortmund in 2023-24, starting 17 times and playing six times in his side’s run to the final. But his contract is set to expire this summer in the Bundesliga.

Leeds want to sign Dortmund star Wolf on a free transfer

Plettenberg reports that Leeds have made an inquiry to sign the five-time Germany star before his contract expires, but promotion will be a must to secure a deal for the “quality” defender.

Wolf, of course, will not make any decision until after the Champions League final, when Dortmund face Real Madrid in the final. He is unlikely to start but could make an appearance off the bench.

Plettenberg reported on X: “Leeds are interested in Wolf, could be a serious option if Leeds get promoted to the Premier League. Leeds are inquiring about the 28-year-old right-back who is leaving Dortmund as a free agent.”

Why Georginio Rutter could help Leeds seal a deal for Wolf

Leeds are not the only club interested with Spanish, Italian and Middle Eastern sides showing interest, but the chance to work under a fellow German in Daniel Farke as a manager could tempt the Dortmund star.

What could also help Leeds is that TransferMarkt claim Wolf is represented by the big agency that handles Georginio Rutter. Leeds dealt with Rutter’s agency just 18 months ago in a record-breaking move.

That relationship could be key to helping seal a deal for Wolf on a free transfer. But if Leeds are to have any chance then promotion is key. All eyes on Sunday when Leeds take on Southampton.
