It’s Monday, which means clubs are nervously anticipating the disciplinary verdicts of the RFL Match Review Panel in Super League.

Three bans were handed down last week, with Wigan Warriors’ Liam Byrne handed a two-game ban for head contact after being shown a yellow card in the opening seconds of the game.

Castleford Tigers’ Liam Horne and St Helens’ Tommy Makinson were both handed one-match penalty notices for dangerous contact and head contact respectively. Both incidents were deemed to warrant red cards by the match officials.

However, both are free to play this weekend due to a loophole that allows them to serve their bans using reserve matches when the first team is not playing.

As neither team played in the semi-finals of the Challenge Cup, they have now served their bans without missing a first-team match.

Indeed, being a Challenge Cup week, only the four teams that took part will be particularly concerned about possible bans today.

Warrington Wolves beat Huddersfield Giants to book their place at Wembley and both teams were involved in some on-field infringements in the match, meaning the Panel looked closely to see if there were any punishable incidents.

Huddersfield’s Jake Connor was the instigator, pushing Jake Thewlis over the billboards and later tackling him after an attempt to play the ball, earning him a yellow card.

Tui Lolohea also exacerbated tensions between the sides with his actions which saw him drag Matty Nicholson to the ground and spark a melee between the two teams.

There were similar incidents in Wigan Warriors’ big win over Hull KR as Tom Opacic and Adam Keighran were themselves involved in an altercation.

Peta Hiku, although initially facing no action, also made contact with Jai Field’s head in an aggressive incident that an academy coach at his own club suggested should have been a red card.

This week, a number of incidents were investigated and did not result in charges, so the released minutes do not include all of them.

Kaide Ellis and Sam Walters were both given one game bans for Grade B Dangerous Contact and Head Contact respectively.

Luke Thompson was fined £250 for the grade B dangerous contact charge because he was not at the top end of the class.

However, Hull FC’s Herman Ese’ese was cited for verbal abuse in his side’s defeat to Catalans Dragons just over a week ago and a decision will be made on Thursday whether there is enough evidence to charge or charges could develop further in a case.

The RFL said: “Thursday’s match review committee meeting will consider further evidence that has been brought forward in relation to the allegation of possible verbal abuse against Hull FC’s Herman Ese’ese in the match at London Broncos on 12 May”.
