The Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) has decided not to renew its lease in the Cornwall Center in Regina, a decision that will close the location next spring.

The downtown store is the only Hudson Bay store in town.

The company “continually evaluates its real estate portfolio and reviews opportunities to optimize holdings,” HBC Vice President of Corporate Communications Tiffany Bourre said in an emailed statement.

While acknowledging Cornwall Centre’s “long-standing relationship” with the department store, a statement from the mall on Tuesday said it looks forward to what future plans for downtown revitalization will take place.

“We are confident in the opportunities this brings to our customers and the community,” the statement said.

The downtown store was forced to close last month after a fire that police said was deliberately set – the latest in a series of incidents at the mall. In December, a stolen taxi was driven through the doors at the south entrance and onto the north entrance. There was also a fire in the H&M elevator in March.

Hudson Bay has since reopened, but will permanently close to the public in April 2025.

“We thank our customers in Regina for their support and look forward to continuing to serve the community,” Bourre wrote, adding that the Saskatoon branch will remain open and transfer opportunities for employees will be considered. “We are committed to treating every associate with respect and fairness through this process.”

As of 2020, HBC has closed several department stores across the country, including in Banff, Edmonton, Burnaby, BC, Winnipeg, Toronto and Dorval, QC.

Last month, the company announced nearly 100 layoffs as part of a “reshaping” of its organizational structure, saying the organization is “sized” to ensure the long-term success of its business and citing pressure from the Canadian retail sector.

In 2023, HBC laid off 250 people in corporate roles.
