Martin Keown believes Liverpool “lost something” when Jurgen Klopp announced his exit.

Klopp rocked the football world on January 26 with a bombshell message announcing his departure after nine years in charge of Liverpool. The emotional impact of the news cannot be understated for Reds supporters as they were left stunned and heartbroken.

It came at a time of the season when Liverpool found themselves in the middle of a three-horse race for the Premier League crown. For a while, it seemed that Klopp’s impending departure gave his players extra motivation to battle the Manchester City machine and win the title to achieve a dream elimination, even with the plethora of injuries they have been dealing with. -they faced

This high was best highlighted by the Carabao Cup final victory over Chelsea at the end of February, where a barebones Liverpool side full of youth players won the first piece of silverware of the season in extra time. However, Liverpool, who have been getting results for some time, saw a draw at Old Trafford, defeat to Crystal Palace and defeat at Goodison Park end their title ambitions.

After holding a four-point lead at the start of March, the Reds have been labeled ‘bottlers’ by some as an inquiry looms into how Klopp missed out on a second league triumph. The German bid his final farewell in Sunday’s 2-0 win over Wolves, with talkSPORT pundit Keown claiming the team’s performances have actually taken a hit following Klopp’s decision to step down.

He said: “I feel when I watch Klopp, he has such an emotional connection with his players. Perhaps Klopp’s embrace didn’t quite have the same impact when he announced he wouldn’t be in the building.

“The way it works in terms of players – he was invaluable when it was going well. But when he’s gone, that human connection suddenly isn’t as important anymore. I think they’ve lost something,” prompting Jim White to ask if he meant it immediately after Klopp’s announcement.

Keown continued: “We sat here that morning and thought, ‘Oh my God, this is powerful. This could take them to the Premier League. But I think the opposite has actually happened and I think the players are starting to look around to be worried about the future.
