The Nun 2 confirms long-standing Conjuring fan theory

The Nun 2 expanded The Conjuring universe and also tied it together more closely, confirming a long-standing fan theory about sister Irene and Lorraine Warren.

Ever since Taissa Farmiga was cast in The Nun, there has been a theory among The Conjuring fans that it will eventually be revealed that Sister Irene and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) are somehow connected, based solely on the fact that the two actors are sisters in real life.

With The Nun taking place in 1952, nearly 20 years before The Conjuring, the main fan theory has been that Irene and Lorraine are the same person.

This never seemed to make a whole lot of sense given what was established about Lorraine in the series. However, The Nun 2 has now confirmed that while they are not the same person, the two characters are In connection with.

How is Sister Irene related to Lorraine Warren?

During the wild ending of The Nun 2, Sister Irene is set on fire by Valak (Bonnie Aarons), now powered by the eyes of Saint Lucy, a holy relic that grants the user angelic powers.

Before she’s completely crispy, Irene thinks about her late mother, and this kicks off a quick montage that proves Irene is a descendant of St. Lucy. This allows him to fight Valak, performing yet another miracle.

It would be easy to miss if you weren’t paying close attention, but during this montage, there’s a quick shot of Lorraine Warren’s eyes. It’s so short you could be forgiven for thinking you’re imagining it, but it’s absolutely there.

β€œThe Conjuring movies always have this family element and explore it in different ways,” director Michael Chaves, who also directed The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, told EW.

“The sisters weren’t on set together, but they love being connected in this universe and I think it tells a deeper family story.”

Like The Nun 2 credits scene, this montage ties The Nun films even closer to the main Conjuring trilogy.

What it does confirm is that Irene and Lorraine are connected in some way, but leaves things open as to exactly how they are connected. Some might think it doesn’t rule out being the same person, but it’s highly unlikely given what we know.

First, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It had Lorraine talking about meeting Ed when she was younger, and there should also be an explanation as to why Lorraine never mentioned fights Valak in The Conjuring 2.

There’s also the fact that The Conjuring movies are supposed to be based on real life, and the real-life Lorraine wasn’t a nun who gave it up to be a demonologist. The show has always played a bit with the true story, but this would be a step too far.

The easier option would be that Irene and Lorraine are just related in some way and are both descended from St. Lucy. It would explain their similar clairvoyant gifts and perhaps create a future team-up.

Again, the real-life Lorraine didn’t have a sister, but they could just use some creative license or make Irene a more distant relative of Lorraine.

Whatever they choose to do next, at least The Nun 2 finally confirmed that, in a way, Irene and Lorraine are related β€” and if they ever team up, the demons better watch out.

The Nun II is in theaters now.
