Commercial strip fire extinguished in Wakefield; 4 firefighters with minor injuries

A fire rocked a strip mall in the Wakefield section of the Bronx this morning — leaving several firefighters with minor injuries and some businesses destroyed.

Firefighters say the blaze broke out at a plumbing store around 7 a.m. at 987 E. 233rd St. were extinguished.

The fire chief at the scene said that four firefighters suffered minor injuries. Responders were still spraying stores to make sure the flames didn’t rekindle.

According to the Department of Buildings’ preliminary report, the fire caused “extensive damage” to commercial construction businesses. Damage was also found at 4013 Gunther Ave. – a two-family house.

The Red Cross is offering relocation assistance to any residents in need.

East 233rd Street between Paulding Avenue and Edenwald Avenue is closed until further notice.

It was not immediately clear how the fire started.
