Huddersfield village restaurant which received a poor food hygiene rating says problems are being ‘rectified immediately’

A village restaurant with one food hygiene star has been told to make “urgent improvements” following an inspection earlier this year.

A Kirklees Council inspector who visited Mozzarella’s in Marsden, near Huddersfield, noted “many recurring issues from the previous inspection”, including a lack of food safety records and some “structural issues”. The inspector also noted “a lot of very stale food on site that should have been thrown away. They seriously affected your rating”.

Kirklees Council’s inspector rated the Peel Street location one star following a visit on February 29 this year. Kirklees Council has now released the inspection report following a Freedom of Information Act request.

The report said: “No food safety entries were available for the week commencing 30 October 2023. Daily log entries and further checks should be completed. This has been raised previously.”

According to Inspector Kirklees, several structural issues previously raised had not been addressed, including the “poor condition” of the floor next to the fridge. The splashback and stove were “dirty with food deposits on them,” the report added.

The inspector noted that there were “many items past their use-by date,” including pepperoni, pasta, risotto rice and scallops. “Ensure shelf life plates are set and understood and food removed when out of date,” the report added.
