Truro’s Moorfield car park has been suddenly closed indefinitely by Cornwall Council

Truro’s largest council car park has been abruptly closed following “concerns” uncovered during an inspection. The multi-storey levels (decks four to nine) of Moorfield car park in the city center are now closed to visitors.

Cornwall Council said the ground floor and outside sections, as well as the reserved permit holder parking area, remain open. Last night’s shock closure of Calenick Street car park – which has more than 680 spaces in total – will add to the woes of people parking in the city following the loss of Viaduct and Carrick House car parks, which have been demolished to make way for the huge Pydar development.

It means there are now just three council-run long-term car parks in the city centre, at Edward Street, Garras Wharf and Moresk, and one short-term car park on Old Bridge Street, which recently added a charge of £31.50 if you walk . in three hours. However, there are also park and ride car parks on the outskirts of Truro at Tregurra and Langarth.

Other car parks include Lemon Quay, High Cross, Tabernacle Street, City Road and the railway station. It comes as people flock to the town for the Truro Farmers Market on Wednesday. Huge crowds are also expected at the funeral in Truro Cathedral of Gaza hero James Henderson from Cornwall. See full details here.

The council’s full statement said: “The multi-storey section of Moorfield car park in Truro will close from tonight (Tuesday 21 May) following concerns highlighted during a routine inspection of the structure. The ground floor and outside sections, as well as the parking area for reserved permit holders, remains open.”
