Police say they belong to Sarah Mayhew – several of the 38-year-old’s remains were found in a park in Croydon last month.

Detectives have confirmed that human remains found in Mitcham yesterday afternoon (Tuesday, May 21) are believed to be those of Sarah Mayhew.

Police were called to Rawnsley Avenue, Mitcham, after human remains were found in a river by contractors carrying out clean-up work.

The police intervened and the crime scene was established.

Following the examination of the remains, detectives informed Sarah’s family of this development. Sarah was 38 and from Croydon.

They continue to be supported by specially trained officers.

Detective Inspector Martin Thorpe, who is leading the investigation, said: “My thoughts go out to Sarah’s family. We will continue to offer our support as our investigation progresses.

“I expect my officers to remain in the area for some time as they carry out important work on site.

“Two people arrested, who were known to Sarah, were later charged with her murder. We are not currently looking for anyone else in connection with her death. Investigations are ongoing.”

An investigation was launched following a call to police shortly after 09:00 on Tuesday, April 2 to reports of possible human remains found on Rowdown Fields in Croydon.

Anyone with information that could help the investigation and who has not yet spoken to police is asked to call 101, quoting reference 1656/02 Apr.
