‘Knocks his socks off’ – Harry Maguire names Scott McTominay as the only Manchester United player who wows him in training

Scott McTominay has been named the player who stands head and shoulders above his Manchester United teammates in training.

That’s according to Red Devils centre-back Harry Maguire, who hailed the Scotland international’s professionalism and dedication.

And his work has paid off, with McTominay boasting ten goals and three assists from 42 games in all competitions this season.

Only United captain Bruno Fernandes and striker Rasmus Hojlund have scored more goals than the 27-year-old.

Maguire, who has been named in England’s provisional Euro 2024 squad despite a minor muscle injury, spoke to talkSPORT’s Michael Gray ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup final against Manchester City – live on talkSPORT.

The former Sunderland left-back asked who is the best manager since Carrington, to which the defender said: “I think I would always go with Scott McTominay.

“They probably don’t blow people away, but they train brilliantly and cover long distances.

“He’s working his socks off and he’s always in the gym doing extra (sessions), so I’ll go with Scotty.”

Former Leicester star Maguire also said the future looks bright for United despite the club ending the campaign in eighth – the lowest in the Premier League.

Maguire praised youngsters Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo, with United’s academy graduates poised for greatness.

He noted: “They’ve been magnificent this season, they’ve come into a situation where we haven’t performed as well as we would have liked.

“We are nowhere near where we should be in the Premier League.

Graeme Souness claims Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford could become one of the biggest “disappointments” in the history of the English game.

“So they came into a difficult situation in a difficult season in a difficult environment and they handled it brilliantly.

“So if we can take positives out of the season we have an amazing cup final to look forward to.

“But the young guys have also come in and shown great moments throughout the season – that gives us a bright future.”

He added: “They came into a really difficult season, we had our problems – a ridiculous amount of injuries – and they came into it.

“It probably wasn’t the greatest environment because we didn’t win as much football as we should at this club.

“But it will make them stronger, it will make them better and they will definitely have a big future at this club.”
