The Foreign Office issues new travel advice for Italy amid updated emergency planning

The Foreign Office has issued a warning for people traveling to Italy after a series of volcanic tremors were detected. In the new update, officials said people going to an area that could be threatened should first familiarize themselves with the safety measures they need to take.

Local authorities have updated their emergency planning as the volcanoes have become more active, the Foreign Office said. He added: “There are several active volcanoes in southern Italy. National emergency planning has been updated for both Vesuvius and the Flegree fields, an area that remains active and experienced tremors in 2024. The Italian Government’s Department of Civil Protection has updated its National Emergency Plan for Mount Vesuvius, which can be read here. It also issued new advisories in the Flegree Fields, saying from 2023, the frequency of earthquakes has gradually increased. To read the advice, click here.

There is also a risk of bushfires during the summer, which the Foreign Office said were “highly dangerous and unpredictable”. It advises people to check the latest weather alerts and forecast and follow the advice of local authorities if they plan to travel to affected areas, adding: “Take care when visiting or driving through forested areas and report fires to emergency services.”
