Live: A gas leak closes Backwell Road and school children are kept inside

A gas leak in Backwell has closed a road close to a secondary school. Station Road was closed by police after workers allegedly hit a gas main.

Backwell School kept its students in class and closed all windows, confirming that the gas leak was not on the school. An eyewitness said: “Station Road closed as workmen hit a major gas main on the corner of Backwell Common – you failed to fix it!

“Advice is to close all windows and keep pets indoors. Pupils at Backwell School are being kept in class.”

Backwell School said in a Facebook post: “There has been a gas leak on Station Road, Backwell (not the school). As a precaution, the police advised us to keep all children in the classroom with the windows closed.

“We will provide further updates in due course. All students are safe.”
