A417 lorry fire: Dramatic footage shows vehicle engulfed in flames

Dramatic footage shows a lorry engulfed in flames on the A417 in the Cotswolds. The vehicle, which was carrying cardboard as cargo, caught fire at around 7.20am today (May 7), causing major disruption and closing the busy road near Winstone in both directions.

The fire also caused damage to a nearby pub, although luckily no injuries were reported. The truck and its cargo were completely destroyed and the pub suffered minor damage.

Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service responded to the incident with four fire engines, which extinguished the blaze. The road was reopened shortly after 9am.

A Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “We were called at 7.21am to reports of a lorry fire on the A417. We sent four fire engines, two from Cheltenham, one from Cirencester and one from Gloucester North, to deal with the incident.”

“A lorry carrying cardboard caught fire and crews used four sets of breathing apparatus, two hose reels and two jets to put it out. The lorry and carton were 100% fire damaged and as the lorry was parked close to a nearby pub. , there was slight damage to the pub (two percent).”

“There were no casualties and the carriageway has now been reopened. The stop time was 9.13am.”

National Highways reports that one lane remains closed northbound for cleanup and delays remain in the area. Motorways said: “The #A417 has reopened in both directions between the #A429 (#Cirencester) and the #A436 (#AirBalloonRoundabout). A 1-lane closure remains in place northbound for recovery and cleanup. Please allow extra travel time if you are in the area.”
