Leeds Rhinos boss talks transfer-linked player

Leeds Rhinos remain in play-off contention despite an up and down season. A series of injuries to key players has hampered the Rhinos’ progress this season. The injury crisis saw them enter the loan market to sign Matty Russell from Warrington Wolves.

Leeds face a crucial Super League game against St Helens on Friday. They need a win to stay in touch with the top six. Russell goes straight into Leeds’ 21-man squad alongside the returning Harry Newman, who has missed several games recently with a back injury.

Ash Handley is also in the squad, meaning Leeds’ back division is almost back to full strength, although Paul Momirovski and David Fusitu’a remain long-term absentees.

Ahead of the game, Leeds head coach Rohan Smith provided an update on the contract status of one of the Rhinos’ first-team regulars, whose place in the starting line-up may be under threat from Russell’s signing.

Luis Roberts joined the Rhinos ahead of the 2023 season, although his opportunities were limited in his first year at the club. However, following a strong pre-season and several injuries in the Leeds back division, he was a regular in 2024.

Roberts has made 11 Super League appearances this season, scoring three tries. His contract is set to expire at the end of this season and he has been linked with a move with two Super League sides in recent weeks. However, Smith has now confirmed that he wants to keep Roberts at Leeds and talks are ongoing over a new conversation.

“Not very often they’re very simple anymore, there’s always complications or options or something. We had discussions with Luis and they continue, as we have with other players.”

When asked if Roberts is someone Smith would like to see stay at Leeds, Smith confirmed he wants to stay at Headingley beyond this season.

“I tried to bring in players who can develop. Luis has developed throughout his time at the club so he is definitely someone I can see staying at the club and continuing to develop.”

Smith was full of praise for the impact Roberts has had this season. He believes Roberts is a positive influence on the Rhinos team.

“He’s one of those guys that they like to play with because he fits in, he gets the job done and he’s a good teammate.

“He helps others with his conversation and general foot awareness. He’s a guy who, as a kid, you’d say had a good season for where he’s at in his development.”

Roberts, who can play both centrally and on the wing, has primarily played on the wing in Fusitu’a’s absence this season. When asked where he sees Roberts’ future in the Leeds squad, Smith confirmed that he would like Roberts to achieve more. playing time in the centers next.

“Luis has been practicing mostly as a center in our pre-season,” Smith said. “Given the circumstances of our roster, an opportunity came up on the wing.

He is a good footballer, has a good knowledge of the game and has learned to play on the wing to a decent level, but he is a better center at the moment and it is something we would like to explore more, especially as the players are more available on the wing.”
