Rail company caps train fares – saving passengers up to £124 a week

Britain’s biggest rail company has launched automatic weekly fare caps, claiming the move will save some passengers up to £124 a week. Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) said it had introduced the measure for the 30,000 passengers using its keyGo smart card service for pay-as-you-go travel.

The announcement means those passengers will pay no more than the value of a weekly pass for multiple journeys between two stations in the keyGo area, which covers most of the GTR network. Once they have reached the maximum limit, all subsequent trips for the rest of the week will be free.

GTR, which owns the Gatwick Express, Great Northern, Southern and Thameslink brands, believes capping weekly fares will benefit commuters who are unsure how often they will travel to work. The company said passengers making four return journeys a week between Brighton and London Victoria could save £124, with a saving of £65 for those traveling between Bedford and the capital.

GTR Acting Customer Director Mark Pavlides said: “Our simple access, access, pay-as-you-go keyGo system guarantees our customers the cheapest fare of the day without the hassle of buying a ticket. The added promise of never charging more than one weekly pass for traveling between the same two stations means thousands of commuters back to the office will never miss out on weekly pass offers, saving hundreds of pounds a week or month.

“And with claims automatically generated by Delay Repay, getting the best deal when you travel by train has never been easier. With keyGo fares – applicable on our Key Smart card – no matter how often you travel between the same two stations each week, you’ll never pay more than one weekly pass.”
