Tribute to Tatsu, the cutie in pink and yellow returns – Coventry City Concept Kits

Season tickets are selling like hotcakes and all Coventry City fans want now are some selection signs and a brand new kit to feast their eyes on and splash their hard-earned cash on.

The Sky Blues have come up with some cracking kits in recent years with the very popular manufacturer Hummel. The home strip is always a winner, with the 2022/23 lanes design and a nod to the iconic Admiral kit of the 1970s, particularly successful in recent years. The club also routinely produces some eye-catching designs and an alternative third kit that has seen the return of purple and the more traditional green and black over the past two campaigns.

Some are instant hits, while others are slow hits, but younger and more mature fans simply love getting their hands on replica jerseys and putting them on their backs for the upcoming season. This year’s official designs were drawn up, signed and sent to suppliers months ago, and now we’re all waiting for the big reveal in the next couple of months and certainly before the pre-season starts on July 1st.

Here we take a look at Sky Blues fan and designer Ben Darlow’s concept kit offerings to whet your appetite.

“I’m a bit of a football kit collector and ever since I was a kid I’ve fantasized about designing the kit the Sky Blues would play in,” he said.

“Although that will probably never happen, that hasn’t stopped me from putting together some ideas for kits I’d like to see on the club. I’ve seen Hummel explore a number of kits over the last few years that pay quite direct homage to famous shirts from Coventry’s history, so I tried to walk the line between paying homage and trying something new and different.”

“I’m a big fan of the Ribero 92-94 home kit with its random splashes of blue, so I wanted to try and pay homage to the abstract nature of that kit without directly following the same style. I used Hummel’s Chevrons as a framework for various different shades of light blue in gradients along each shape, scattered randomly across the fabric.”

“The concentric rings in the background pattern here are a traditional Japanese motif called Seigaiha, so this is in part a tribute to our Japanese superstar, Tatsu Sakamoto. For this design I used a few different shades of pink-orange, which may or may not be the color of a certain sparkly debit card you’ve seen around…”

“One of two different treatments for a ‘darkness’ kit; this is the all black version. The vertical bars are formed using the audio waveform for We’ll Live And Die In These Towns. I placed some pink and blue lights. on it to help bring out the details, but in reality everything would be black!”

“A lot of people seem to want a black and gold kit, so I thought the blackout kit would work well with a gold accent. Obviously a real kit should use proper glossy metallic plastic for details… Perhaps a fitting way to celebrate the promotion?

This kit uses the same Hummel chevrons template as the green and black shirt and is part homage to our 95/96 away kit, part throwback color theme (I’m an 80s kid).”

“We’ve created three different versions of this template, paying homage to the away kits of previous years. This one, in green and black, is inspired by the stripes worn by the likes of Dion Dublin and Peter Ndlovu.”

“Use the chevron stripe pattern more! This time inspired by our Asics away kits from 89-91, as well as the first away kit produced by Hummel for us in 18/19.”

“I’ve long been a fan of the pink shirts that other clubs have done well (Manchester United in 18/19 and Juventus in 15/16 immediately spring to mind). Although the design is very minimalistic, it features the four basic symbols. of the club (Elephant, Castle, Eagle and Phoenix) in a subtle pattern that repeats on the fabric.”
