Erik ten Hag press conference Manchester United live updates and squad news for the FA Cup final

Kieran McKenna is open to taking over as United manager if Erik ten Hag leaves the club after the FA Cup final.

Former United manager and boyhood fan McKenna could leave Ipswich Town after guiding them to promotion to the Premier League amid interest from United, Chelsea and Brighton.

Brighton have earmarked McKenna as their preferred choice to replace Roberto de Zerbi, but it is understood they could be outbid by Chelsea or United. Sources say Chelsea have already held talks with McKenna’s representatives but he is reluctant to rush into a decision amid the possibility of a managerial change at United, believed to be his ideal destination.

Chelsea sacked Mauricio Pochettino on Tuesday night and the Argentine has coveted the United role for the best part of five years. He is the current favorite of the bookies.

Thomas Tuchel, who recently left Bayern Munich, would also be relishing a return to England at United, where he managed to beat Bayern in the Champions League group stage in December.

McKenna, 38, is under contract at Ipswich until 2025 and United have not made a final decision on the Ten Hag’s future as they remain focused on Saturday’s FA Cup final against Manchester City.

Ten Hag is contracted to United until next year, with the club having the option of an additional year. United finished eighth in the Premier League table – outside the European qualification places – but could qualify for the Europa League if they win the FA Cup.

McKenna joined United to become their academy coach in September 2016, before being promoted to first-team coach by Jose Mourinho in the summer of 2018.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has retained McKenna as part of his backroom staff and the Ulsterman has worked with Ralf Rangnick in his first three games in caretaker charge before taking over as manager at Ipswich in December 2021.

Ipswich became the first club since Southampton in 2012 to achieve back-to-back promotions from League One to the top flight, ending a 22-year exile from the top flight.
