The final Olympic diving places will be decided at the GB Aquatics Championships

Sandwell Aquatics Center hosts the first senior national competition of the 2022 Commonwealth Games this weekend, almost two years on from the historic Games in Birmingham.

This time the final places for Team GB at the Paris Olympics are on the line as Britain’s best divers take to the pool where Team England divers won 15 medals in five days at Birmingham 2022.

A number of these athletes return to action this weekend as they look to book one of the individual places in Team GB’s Paris squad.

Team GB have the maximum number of places available in Paris following strong team performances in international events, with two divers available to be selected for each of the individual events.

The winning diver in each event will book their place in Paris, provided they meet the qualifying standard, and will join the four synchronized pairs that were pre-selected earlier this month. Any places left unallocated will then be decided by the selection panel

This will give the likes of Noah Williams, Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix and Jack Laugher an opportunity to represent the nation in both synchronized and individual competitions as they look to continue their strong form of recent months.

As well as places in Paris, there are national titles at stake and the chance to be selected for next month’s European Diving Championships in Belgrade.

There is also a great opportunity for some of the younger divers to take on their older counterparts, with Team Y divers Libby Mitson, Amelie Underwood and Oscar Willcox all in action over the four days of gaining more experience. valuable.

BBC Sport is showing all finals sessions live on BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website and app, with the rest of the action available to watch on the Aquatics GB YouTube channel.

“really top diving action”

Looking ahead, Associate Performance Director for Aquatics GB, Tim Jones, told Aquatics GB: “So many of our divers have cherished memories of this venue from their time at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, when they performed outstandingly in in front of a raucous home crowd. .

“After two years, they return to Sandwell for what is a key event in our final selections for the Olympic team heading to Paris in just a few months’ time, as well as the group for the European Championships in June in Belgrade – and that will make for some really top diving action over the next few days.

“Every international competition that British divers have competed in during this Olympic cycle has demonstrated the reasons why our athletes will push each other, as well as themselves, when they step onto the boards at Sandwell.

“Whether it was a record medal haul at this year’s World Championships in Doha, historic successes for our divers at the last two World Championships, eye-catching performances at last year’s European Games, continued success at World Junior and European Junior level . or even more recent examples from the World Diving World Cup Super Finals and competitions involving senior and junior divers from Indianapolis and Dresden, the commitment and quality of our athletes in training, and the world-class coaches and support staff they work with, it’s clear for all to see once they enter the arena.”
