TfL reminds customers: Colindale Station to close for 6 months

TfL has issued a press release reminding customers that Colindale station on the Edgware branch of the Northern line will close from 7 June 2024 until December 2024 for vital upgrades.

The project, funded by the Government’s Leveling Up Fund, Barnet Council, local developers and TfL, aims to improve accessibility and capacity.

During the closure, customers should use local buses to get to Burnt Oak, Hendon Central or Mill Hill Broadway. A free bus (NL6) will run every 15 minutes during peak hours between Colindale and Hendon Central. Fares on the 186 bus route between Mill Hill Broadway and Hendon Central will be automatically refunded for Contactless or Oyster card users.

From December, a temporary platform access passage will be opened, with the full upgrade to be completed by autumn 2025. The project includes a new station entrance, a larger ticket hall and step-free access.

The planned track closures on the Northern line between Edgware and Golders Green will support construction and improve service reliability. The upgrade will help support the development of 11,400 new homes.

Stuart Harvey, TfL’s Chief Capital Officer, said: “Work is progressing well on the much-needed major upgrade of Colindale station and is set to transform the journeys of many thousands of our customers, making the station more accessible and welcoming and ensuring it is fit to serve this rapidly growing community for many decades to come. We apologize for the unavoidable disruption this update will cause to our customers, but we are committed to doing everything we can to ensure that through our detailed travel advice, they can plan ahead and complete their journeys using the public transport. “

Cllr Barry Rawlings, leader of Barnet Council, said: “Colindale is one of the fastest growing boroughs in London, with a population that has expanded by 70% in the last 10 years. The tube station redevelopment is badly needed as it reaches capacity by 2026 and, left undone, will stifle our plans to further regenerate the area.

“I am very pleased that TfL is organizing the additional free NL6 bus service as well as innovative automatic refunds for those who make relevant journeys using the 186 bus route. This will help those who normally use the tube station during the works. We look forward to seeing the new, larger and fully accessible station next year.”
