Village fish and chip shop, worth a visit from Birmingham for the kebabs alone

Brummies flock to pretty Alvechurch when the sun comes out to enjoy canal walks and country pubs on the Cross City train line. However, despite the many drinking holes, there is only one small fish and chip shop in this parish.

Tudor Rose Fish Bar couldn’t look any older from the outside. It’s in the bottom corner of a Tudor-looking black and white painted house where the odd-sounding Bear Hill meets Red Lion Street in this charming commuter village.

Just over the border from Worcestershire, Alvechurch is surrounded by fields and country lanes. It’s also caught between the River Arrow and the Worcester and Birmingham Canal, so I thought what better way to do this taste test than in the great outdoors.

No plates at home for me as I tried a large fish and chips and a chicken kebab still in their paper wrappers while sitting on a bench with a loved one looking out over the stunning countryside. Full marks for happy surroundings, in any case.

It had been hard to choose what to have back in the bijou fish bar as there are so many on offer. There’s also a long list of cooked-to-order items that take a little more time, including haddock, scampi and chicken burgers.

One of the cheapest items is a cheeseburger at £3.50, while children’s meals are £4.49. A mini fish (£4.80) and chips (£2.50) comes in at £7.30, while a large cod and chips is £10.
