Benni McCarthy sends message to Manchester United star, says he is ‘deserved’

Manchester United haven’t had the kind of season that deserves a big awards celebration.

Instead, the club decided to announce the winners on a Thursday afternoon while manager Erik ten Hag was holding his pre-FA Cup final press conference.

Bruno Fernandes won the Sir Matt Busby award, before Diogo Dalot won the player of the year award as voted for by his peers.

There was a hint of that earlier in the week when Alejandro Garnacho named Dalot “player of the season”.

Diogo Dalot held Manchester United together

Manchester United’s injury problems have wreaked havoc on the club’s form this season and created major selection issues in defence.

Every full-back has spent time injured, apart from Diogo Dalot, who missed just one game through suspension after a harsh red card against Liverpool.

Without Dalot’s unblemished injury record, United’s season would have been almost impossible to complete.

He also managed to raise his own game with a better-than-ever performance, contributing three goals and five assists.

Dalot received a congratulatory message from striker coach Benni McCarthy. The defender got his goal against Brighton last weekend as a centre-forward.

McCarthy sent a message, writing: “Congratulations bro. Well deserved.”

The final role of the Diogo Dalot Cup is uncertain

Diogo Dalot’s role for the FA Cup final is still a bit uncertain. He will be on the pitch – but will he start on the right or the left?

It has been alternated in recent weeks, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka back. United are still without a left-back and Erik ten Hag has to decide who will play on which flank.

One thing we know, Dalot is an absolute place to start. As player of the season, you wouldn’t want it any other way.
