Rishi Sunak’s blistering statement on the 4th July General Election has got Coventry Live readers talking about what we could see in the next 6 weeks in our comments section. And it seems that they are not impressed with the offers of the big parties so far.

The prime minister made the announcement after a cabinet meeting on Wednesday (22), ending months of speculation about when Sunak would start the race. The Conservatives have faced large deficits in opinion polls to Labour, but that could change by polling day.

Reader Tedwarks simply said: “Tories Out, to help.” Wb38 wrote: “Nothing will get better under what is effectively a ‘one party’ of Labor and Tory. Can you tell the difference?”

Comment Destroyedcountry can’t see a turning point: “It was about time, but don’t get your hopes up for the country, the damage done has gone too far to repair. I won’t vote Tory either, no recovery if I don’t either. the big party is elected, it needs a complete reform of our system, and no, the Reform Party is not the answer, not by a long shot.”

Ijg focused on local issues: “He won’t vote for MP Sultana until he grows up a bit.” Scrapperblackwell replied: “I’m almost 80 years old and admire her courageous stance on many issues. She may not be cut out to be a minister, but we need MPs with hearts in the right place to make sure leaders are held to account.”

Flewthenest02 writes: “The good people of Coventry will still vote Labor as they did in the local elections. No more sympathy… and the Tories are no better!”

On our Facebook page, Wolfgang Maximilian said: “Vote Labour, vote Tory, don’t expect life to get better, this country needs people outside the elite circle.”

The Conservative Party is expected to target three local seats – Coventry North West, Coventry South and Warwick and Leamington. Taking these seats could be a tough ask for the Conservatives. Zarah Sultana won Coventry South by a majority of 401 in 2019 – a total of 19,544 votes to 19,143 for the Conservatives.

Ms Sultana has held the seat since 2019 after Labor MP Jim Cunningham resigned. He had held the seat since 1992 and won a majority of over 4,000 in the 2017 election.

Coventry North West is another long-standing Labor seat which had a new MP at the last election when Taiwo Owatemi won with a majority of 208. Warwick and Leamington was a Tory seat for Chris White from 2010 to 2017, when Matt Western won it for Labor by a majority of 1,206. In the 2019 election, he had a majority of 789.
