Queues at Birmingham airport live as passengers say ‘carnage’

Passengers at Birmingham Airport are reporting “carnage” and long snaking queues this morning, Friday 24 May. Images shared by anxious travelers on X, formerly Twitter, show long queues to get inside the terminal.

The queue moves through the ground floor check-in areas, just before reaching main security, and is similar to last week’s scenes at BHX, which one passenger described as “hurtful”. Friday morning is expected to be a busy pre-holiday travel day, with tourists heading for sunnier climes in destinations such as Tenerife, Faro and Ibiza.

This morning a Twitter user shared a photo of the queue at 5.39am, saying: “Absolute carnage trying to get through security at Birmingham airport…. Queues at the airport door after an hour long queue for luggage drop off…. Shocking considering it’s half term. you start!”

Another posted at 6.49am: “Polite warning to anyone flying out of Birmingham airport… it’s busy.” The race is on to get the new security area at BHX in Solihull ready for the June 1 deadline. BHX hit back last week, claiming ongoing construction work to build the airport’s new security search area meant passengers found themselves queuing in “unknown areas”. And they added that given the sunny conditions, they were queuing for passengers outside, away from the construction work.

Airport travel advisories indicate no delays to departures this morning. We contacted Birmingham Airport for an update this morning.

Why are there queues?

The airport is currently carrying out construction work to build a “more streamlined” security area. BHX’s “state-of-the-art” security hall upgrade, a £60m project after “inflationary costs” prompted the multi-million pound rebuild, will see the terminal transformed by June 1. However, as a result of this construction work, passengers had to queue in different areas to get to the lifts that take them to the scanning room.

What do passengers say?

This morning a traveler shared a photo of the queue at 5.39am, saying: “Absolute carnage trying to get through security at Birmingham airport… Queues at airport gate after 1 hour queue for baggage claim.”
