Voter ID numbers Sheffield – Local Elections 2024

Following the local elections on Thursday 2 May, we collected voter ID numbers for people turned away on polling day for not having an acceptable form of ID.

These figures can be found on the Sheffield City Council website.

Kate Josephs, warrant officer for Sheffield City Council, said:

“This year was only the second time voters have been asked to bring photo ID when they cast their ballot and I am encouraged to see that the vast majority of people in Sheffield have done just that.

“The number of people who initially refused because they didn’t have voter ID was small compared to the total number of people who turned up to vote and it’s fantastic to see that many of them later returned with the correct identity.

“We as a Council have again worked very hard to provide residents with all the information they may need about this process, including all acceptable forms of ID and how you can apply for ID if you don’t have it – you would have This is the work we will continue to do to ensure that everyone who can vote in Sheffield can do so.

“I would also like to thank the hundreds of polling staff who supported the delivery of this year’s local elections and supported so many people in Sheffield to cast their vote.”

With the upcoming general election, voters are being urged to check that they have acceptable ID and, if not, apply for a free certificate of voter authority.

Key dates ahead of the July 4 general election:
  • Register to vote by June 18 at 11:59 p.m
  • by mail June 19, 5 p.m
  • by proxy June 26, 5 p.m
  • Request a free electoral authority certificate by June 26 at 5:00 p.m. (applies to anyone without a valid ID)
