Mayor Perry – listening Croydon – Newsroom

As Executive Mayor, I have made it a top priority to listen to our tenants and landlords and work with them to review and improve our housing services. Therefore, I was delighted to participate in the launch of a new photo album with cleaning care standards.

This bespoke guide will be used by housing staff to improve the care service on our properties and by residents carrying out inspections in their local areas as part of our neighborhood voice scheme.

I want to say a huge thank you to all of our residents who have contributed to the development of these standards and this photo book.

We recently visited Thornton Heath to see our intensive blitz clean in action, where we send teams to tackle the graffiti and fly tipping that blight our neighbourhoods. It was great to be with Thornton Heath Community Action Team (THCAT) and we discussed how we can work together to tackle issues in their local area and make our streets cleaner. Find out more.

At our annual Council meeting on Wednesday, New Addington North Councilor Kola Agboola was appointed as the new Civic Mayor and First Citizen of Croydon for the coming year. Councilor Richard Chatterjee has been appointed Civic Deputy Mayor. A welcome to them both in their new roles, I know they will be fantastic champions for our local communities. I would also like to thank Councilor Tony Pearson for his dedication to the people of Croydon as Mayor for the past year and Councilor Appu Srinivasan who has been Deputy Mayor.

We work closely with Croydon’s Met Police and this week they shared with me the results of a live camera facial recognition operation carried out in Thornton Heath. The cameras only recognize suspects on a watch list and do not record images of anyone else. This deployment led to a number of arrests – including a man suspected of threatening people at the station with an offensive weapon. Making our communities safer is a priority for me and we will continue to work with the police and community and voluntary organizations to achieve this shared goal.

It was wonderful that a number of organizations and charities in Croydon were recognized for the work they do in our communities at a garden party at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday. I hope they enjoyed their special day.

There’s still time to visit Croydon Museum’s fascinating ‘Tenison’s Through Time’ which I opened last week. The exhibition traces the journey of the school founded in 1714 by Archbishop Tenison here in Croydon. Find out more.

A very happy Vesak to our communities who celebrated the Buddhist festival this week and I would also like to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable bank holiday weekend.

Jason Perry

Chief Executive of Croydon
